About me

Outdoor loving meteorologist

Hi! I am Páll Ágúst, a meteorologist, search and rescue volunteer and have been guiding outdoors, on glaciers and hiking for some years. Here I am hanging in a crevasse... one of the nice places! Read on to get to know more about me, my professional experience and higher education in meteorology.

Higher education in meteorology

Half way through my BSc in geophysics in Iceland I became fascinated with the weather and all of it aspects. Since then I have spent most of my time studying or working with the weather. After having learned what I could in Iceland and worked as a research intern at the Icelandic Meteorological Office I went abroad to Sweden to do a MSc degree in meteorology at Uppsala University. Soon after I was drawn back to Sweden, this time to the capital Stockholm to do a PhD in fluid dynamics at the department of engineering mechanics there. I currently work full time there as a PhD student reasearching the atmospheric boundary layer, the lowest part of the atmosphere where we all live.

Professional experience

My relevant professional experience consists of both meteorology and outdoors/guiding business. I have worked guiding groups on glaciers in Iceland and Greenland and have certifications in hard ice and alpine trekking guiding from AIMG - the Association of Icelandic Mountain Guides. Within that business I also operate my own company doing mountain and glacier guiding in Iceland and east Greenland as well as leading backpacking tours.

I have worked as an operational forecaster at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, creating forecast for the public and businesses night and day all year around over land, sea and for aviation. There I have also worked with research on weather in Iceland.

Additionally I spend my free time in Iceland volunteering for the Search and Rescue association ICE-SAR. There I specialise in mountain and avalanche rescue, teaching basic and intermediate winter mountaineering avalanche rescue courses.

During the last years I have participated in freestanding courses on weather, forecasting, mountaineering and rescue related subjects. They are taught by private companies in the meteorological field and forecasting, governmental institutions and voluntary organisations. Those and conferences in Iceland and abroad within the field ensure that I am up to date on new topics.
